KIOSK (Knowledge and Information Open-air Structural Kinetoscope)
KIOSK is conceived as a pop-up installation for an interactive outdoor workshop and information booth. The KIOSK structure, designed by Aletheia Ida, debuted with an original soundtrack, titled “No Place Like Anyplace” by John Malmborg, which includes seven instrumental songs. The structure is designed with salvaged materials, including recycled gymnasium flooring wood planks and a large, laminated glass piece. In this case, the floors become vertical and the glass becomes horizontal, reconceptualizing the traditional application of building materials in new configurations. The salvaged materials are supported with CNC routed plywood that comprises four corners for informational displays and shelves made from the negative cuts of the routing process. There are four booths at the KIOSK that allow for people to interact with a tablet and headphones to view workshop contents independently. KIOSK is identified as a Knowledge and Information Open-air Structural Kinetoscope. The kinetoscope is an early filming technology where an individual could view the reel by standing next to the apparatus and look through a pin-hole. The KIOSK emulates this early concept with new technology and slats blocking views elsewhere during the viewing experience.
